Having a 'niche'
Amy Winehouse was a english singer songer writer and was known for her powerful vocals. Amy winehouse's musical genres were r&b, soul and jazz. She was signed to Island Lioness and Universal Republic. Amy Winehouse was the perfect niche in the market, with her individual style and her incredibly different voice. At the time she released her first album Frank, nothing in the music industry was like her, which made her more interesting and her image was very different to solo female artist's around that time. Jazz is becoming more and more popular and are producing different styles with jazz. Another artist such as Nicola Conte is an italian producer and guitarist and is known for intruducinging an innovative style of acid jazz.

Branding
Branding is used to establish a band or artist's identity to create a image for their audiences to recognize and attract more, as with this they can create merchandise to sell at performances or band shops. This can include t-shirts, stickers, badges or posters; by this it can promote their image more.
Arvil Lavigne is a Canadian singer-songwriter; she released her first album in 2003 called Let Go. When she first gained publicity, she was known for her tomboyish style, as she preferred wearing baggy clothes and converse. From this she was known in the media as a 'Pop Punk Princess' due to her fashion and music influences. Recently she has changed entirely as she has become girlier in her appearance. Arvil Lavigne defended her new style: "I don't really regret anything. You know, the ties and the wife beaters and all... It had its time and place. And now I'm all grown up, and I've moved on" Her new image/brand has fit in with the modern generation, as her music has changed and become more upbeat she has attracted more audiences with her style and her new sounds. Her new image has come across well in her new videos for example "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend' the video was more fun and brighter than her older music videos. Above here I have separated her recent image to her old image and to show the different in style and brightness of it.
The Online Revolution
The new revolution of music downloads and social networking sites have helped dramatically how artists are seen and how they promote their material. Jose Vanders is a singer songwriter and has grown her music profile through social networking sites such as my space and Youtube. This has helped her increase her fan base and has been able to reach out though the sites. Also she has met other artists that have followed the same route as her such as Luke Leighfield where now they are currently touring together. She has received substantial airplay, having been chosen as Xfm’s unsigned artist of the week. Jose Vander’s has self-produced her music and has independently released four EPs, which have sold over a few thousand copies and also has over 2 million plays across MySpace and Youtube. From this success you can see how the Internet has helped this artists grow and be ongoing in her music career. The Internet has become more able than ever in the recent years, so promoting music in the Internet has made it much easier for people to listen and see their material. Apart from the Internet, there are also some traditional ways where artists have promoted their material. A band I found that uses this technique are called Blah Blah Blah they do not have a social networking site but rely on talking and growing their audience in town over England, such as interacting with the audience by handing out flyers for gigs or merchandise. The band also make there own artwork or their poster and Cd covers, which also make their fans more intrigued by them and more interesting They also perform at local events and were recently supporting Kate Nash at Bloomsbury ballroom where they had a very enthusiastic crowd. The band also hand out EP’s which they produce themselves and hand them out.

Kate Nash is an english artist who was signed to Fiction, Moshi Moshi and Universal - Island but now is currently represented by Island Def Jam Ireland. Kate's genre of music is indie pop/rock. The way this artists promotes herself into the music industry is in different ways to reach out to her audiences by performing at festivals from this way playing new songs to her audiences. Also from posters, over the internet and the radio. By having a larger fan base and a good label she is more able to promote her music in different ways. In the time she has started performing she has had instance success, she has two albums including a number one single. Also she has won a brit award for Best Female Artist.
Adele:
Adele is a english based artist and who is signed to XL and Columbia. Her genre of music is soul and singer/songwriter. Since she had started performing she has become a word wide success. She currently ha two albums 19 and 21 which have been very popular. The way she promotes her music and how she reaches out to her audience has been through performing and interviews at varies different talk shows which helps her connect with her audience so they can learn more about her. Also she has promoted her music in magazines, internet and radio. Adele has also won two awards which were for Best New Artist and for Best Female Vocal Pop Performance.

As she has increased her profile she is more able to promote her music in different ways. Marina's genre of indie pop which is becoming increasingly popular and is also is a big competitive section in the music industry. In the time she has started performing she has had instance success, she has two albums and have had won two awards which were for best UK and Irish Act and for Best Newcomer.

In promoting your music there are better ways to do it and some are not so effective. The best way of promoting an album or a single is by reaching out to your audience and where they will most likely to look for new bands or singers, this could be from performing on varies different shows or another way would be on social networking sites such as youtube or myspace as they can have banners on different websites showing when an album is out or tour dates. Also there are ways that are not very successful as others, this could be the radio especially for a younger target audience by promoting your new ablum over the radio, would not be very successful as majority of younger people do not listen to the radio and this may not reach out to them as an artist would want. Another way that may not work to promote your music could be magazines as there is a wild range of different magazines for different interest and they might not be seen as much as they would like.
